Systemic racism – the struggles of getting justice

Listen Now

A change in Colorado’s hate crimes statute attempts to make it easier to prosecute a bias- or hate-motivated crime. Prior versions of the statute said a crime could only be considered a hate crime if it was “wholly motivated by hate.” But the updated language now says “wholly or in part.” This week we speak to a woman who experienced a hate crime, which sparked a more than two-year journey for justice. The ultimate question: Did the statute change make a difference?

A note that this week’s episode refers to language and violence some may find offensive and hurtful.

This week’s guests include: Lindsay Minter with Denver’s Black Lives Matter, Melissa Hall of Colorado Springs, and CPR reporter and producer of the podcast “Systemic” Jo Erickson.
